Plymouth Albion is thrilled to announce the signing of young Welshman Phil Jones. The Fly-half/Full back has signed a one-year deal after stints at Ospreys and Swansea RFC. The Gower native told us all about his Rugby education and the deciding factor behind his decision.
“I’ve just finished university and I found myself at a natural crossroad. The opportunity came up to come to Plymouth and be a part of the journey over the next few years which is really exciting for me!
It was a tough decision after playing all of my senior Rugby at Swansea RFC and I love the club and all the boys there which made it really tough but I’m looking forward to the new challenge of a new club, a new type of Rugby and seeing what we can achieve as a group in the next couple of seasons.
The guys I have already spoken to at the club like Damian (Welch), Max (Venables) and Chris Bentley they all speak so passionately about the club and their vision for the next few years. Is so exciting but also the values they talk about are shared by myself and that is very important to me. I watched the awards night the other day and Chris Bentley talks about being hard-working but doing it with a smile on your face and stuff like that is what really resonated with me. It just made me more excited because I knew I was joining a good club
I grew up playing local club rugby down in Gower, went into the Swansea schoolboys under 15’s team and then after that went through to the Ospreys and played at their academy for a couple of years. While I was there, I was playing most of my rugby at Swansea RFC in the Welsh prem along with playing for Wales at different age groups.
My philosophy, I’d rather run than kick it. When I’m playing Rugby, I want to be involved in an exciting game but I think there’s also a time to be smart with it too. I like to think of myself quite sensible and knowing when to kick and when to run but certainly, if a run is on then I’ll have a crack at it, I’m all for that!”
We can’t wait for Jones to step out onto the pitch at Brickfields and help us with the 2020/21 campaign. We feel he is a great addition to an already strong squad, so please join us in giving him a very warm welcome to Plymouth!
