The Run In Is On: A Three Way Fight at the Top

Latest News

Five games to go for most. Six for a few. And at the top of National League 1, it is properly alive.

Rotherham Titans lead on 91 points.

Plymouth Albion are right there on 86.

Blackheath are firmly in the mix on 82.

Sale FC sit on 76 and are more than capable of shaping what happens next.

It is not done. It is a genuine title race.

Albion’s surge

Let’s start with Albion.

An 11 game winning streak through the heart of the season changed everything. What once looked like a steady campaign suddenly became a serious push. Momentum built. Belief followed. Results stacked up very quickly.

That run did not happen by chance. It was built on discipline, composure and a team that found rhythm at exactly the right time.

The recent loss at Blackheath tightened things up, but it did not undo the work. With three home games still to come at Brickfields and a huge trip to Rotherham ahead, this season is still very much alive.

Rotherham setting the pace

Credit where it is due. Rotherham have been winning for fun.

Eighteen wins from twenty one. A points difference of +399. When they win, they tend to win well. That scoreboard control could matter if things go down to the wire.

They sit five clear. They are in front for a reason. But they still have to navigate the run in, and that includes facing Albion who previously beat them here at Brickfields.

Blackheath are not going away

Blackheath are absolutely contenders.

They showed it by beating Albion. They have shown it all season with 16 wins and a healthy points difference of +272. They are close enough that one strong fortnight could pull them right into the centre of the conversation.

They still have big games to come. If the teams above them slip, Blackheath are close enough to strike.

Sale will test anyone

Sale FC might be fourth, but nobody sees them as an easy fixture.

They are physical, direct and capable of putting points on the board quickly. With head to head games still to come against title rivals, they could end up playing a decisive role in how this finishes.

Travelling to Heywood Road in the run in is not something any contender will take lightly.

What is still possible?

Here is the mathematical finishing window for each side based on current points and remaining games.

What does that tell us?

It is realistically a three team title race with two outsiders.

The Playoff race is between six teams.

Albion are guaranteed a top five finish.

Nobody at the top can afford a wobble.

The games everyone is circling

There are two fixtures that could reshape the top of the table in the space of seven days.

First up, Rotherham vs Blackheath this weekend.

If Rotherham win, they stretch further clear at the top. The gap to first grows and the pressure shifts onto everyone chasing. For Albion, it would mean second place remains firmly in their control and the home advantage playoff position becomes even more valuable.

If Blackheath win, the picture changes instantly. The gap compresses. First place is wide open again. Momentum swings. Suddenly three sides are separated by very little heading into the final stretch.

Then comes the one supporters are already talking about.

Rotherham vs Plymouth.

A win for Albion there would pull the leaders back within touching distance and potentially flip the energy of the title race. A win for Rotherham would strengthen their grip and force the chasing pack to rely on other results.

Sale will be watching both weekends closely. Because in a run in like this, momentum can shift fast.

The final stretch starts now

This is where the noise gets louder.

Rotherham host Blackheath. Albion prepare for their own run in starting with Rams at home on the 14 March for Men’s Day Out. Supporters start doing the maths. Players focus on performance.

A Rotherham win this weekend stretches the summit but keeps second place firmly in Albion’s hands. A Blackheath win blows the door back open and turns the final weeks into a genuine scramble at the top.

Either way, nothing is settled.

For Albion, the task is simple in principle, demanding in execution. Take care of home games. Stay ruthless in the details. Keep stacking points. Apply pressure.

Because in a title race like this, you do not need everything to go your way. You just need to be close enough when it matters most.

Five games left.

Four teams in the fight.

And everything still to play for.
