Retained players confirmed for 22/23 season

Latest News

As the build-up to the 22/23 season begins, Plymouth Albion have released a bumper retained list that contains all bar one of the 21/22 squad.

As the team returns to commence preseason, the faithful can certainly expect a stronger showing from the Albion men as the ambitious Project 150 commences.

With 17 new faces last term, consistency was always going to be key for Albion and they have certainly achieved that. With the team finding its feet in the closing stanza of the season, they gained 17 league points out of a possible 25, momentum will be key and this certainly helps. With more new signings in the pipeline alongside a few Exeter Chiefs academy, expectation is for a more positive campaign from Albion.

Speaking of the positive news, head coach Damian Welch said, “For us, this off-season squad retention has been vital. We struggled a bit at the beginning of the season with a lot of new faces and new systems which naturally will take time to gel. There’s a huge benefit in consistency of tenure amongst the playing squad and so we are really pleased to have been able to retain the squad ready to work and improve for next season. There’s a lot of talent that’s been retained and coupled to the experience gained last season and a few new faces coming in we are excited to get back to work and play some rugby

Echoing the sentiment was ‘inspiring player of the year’ Phil Jones. “It’s great to have been able to re-sign at the club for next season. We had a mixed year with lots of highs & plenty of lows but seasons like this are what brings a group stronger together and we’ll be better for it. We’ve been to some dark spots throughout the year and now we’ll be better at dealing them and I think as we showed towards the back end of the season, we will give any team in the league a run for their money. I’m excited to be staying at the club, there’s something special building and I love the city, being by the water and there’s definitely a togetherness of the city which not many other places have. Everyone should be excited for the next few seasons I think, the setup & investment at the club and the buy-in from the fans only points one way and that is towards the top spots of the league where we want to be.”

Albion commence their preseason training this Saturday with both preseason and league fixtures due to be announced later this month
