Remembering David Westlake

Latest News

1943 – 2025

Plymouth Albion is deeply saddened to announce the passing of former player David Westlake, who died on 23rd June 2025 following a short illness. He was 82 years old.

Born on 11th February 1943, David’s name is woven into Albion’s proud history. A right winger of immense pace and precision, he represented the club across 12 seasons between 1961 and 1973, during an era of fiercely competitive and spirited rugby.

A standout moment in David’s playing career came on 21st November 1970, when he scored six tries in a memorable home victory over Old Cranleighans, helping Albion to a commanding 45–6 win at Brickfields. Performances like these defined David not only as a player of great flair, but also as a consistent and trusted part of the squad throughout the 1960s and early 70s.

David was part of a proud Albion tradition, following in the footsteps of his father, George Westlake, and sharing the pitch with his younger brother, Tony Westlake. The two brothers made their first appearance together for the United XV on 30th October 1965, in a match against Seale-Hayne – a rare and cherished moment for any rugby family.

Away from the pitch, David dedicated his professional life to his career as a Bank Manager, where he was known for the same diligence and integrity that marked his rugby.

David Westlake’s legacy at Plymouth Albion is not only recorded in matchday programmes or try tallies – it lives on in the values he embodied, the connections he forged, and the generations he inspired.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the Westlake family and all who knew and loved David.
