Plymouth born Squire to stay at Plymouth Albion

Plymouth Albion have confirmed that local boy Dean Squire has signed his contract to stay at the club next season. Centre Dean, 22, started playing rugby at around six years old as his mum, who is Welsh, and her family were all into it. He hit 50 caps for Plymouth Albion last season, and is currently at University in Plymouth studying to become a primary school teacher.

Dean is looking forward to the year ahead: “I can see that the club is moving forward and I love the way things seem to be going, and I’m really pleased to be part of that. We have a great group of lads at Plymouth Albion, and although ultimately it would be amazing to get promoted at the end of the season, we will take it one game at a time and see what happens.

I’ve learnt a lot over the past two years, especially from Kieran Hallett and James Earp, but there’s always more to push for personally and I’m looking forward to progressing with them and the rest of the team.”

Dean had an eventful 2017/18 season culminating in winning two awards at the player’s dinner. One being the new Albion Award, which is given to the player that consistently portrays the characteristics that define what it means to be a Plymouth Albion player (namely excellence in performance, work rate, honesty, accountability and adaptability), the winner being chosen by Kieran. He also won ‘Try of the Season’ for his score against Hull Ionians

Head coach Kieran Hallett said: “I’m delighted that Dean had signed on for next season. He was outstanding for us last year and as a result picked up ‘Try of the Season’ as well as our new ‘Albion Award’ at the end of season player’s dinner. He has improved a huge amount over the past two seasons and I’m looking forward to seeing that continue.”
