Leading legal recruitment firm, Blue Pencil, has partnered with Plymouth Albion RFC in an innovative commercial tie-up which sees Plymouth Albion taking on a Blue Pencil recruitment franchise for the South West. Whilst Blue Pencil has been operating since 2002 and is a significant player in the legal recruitment market, this is a first for Plymouth Albion. Managing Director of Plymouth Albion, Max Venables, is under no illusion why this move makes perfect sense in the current climate:
“A Rugby Club is like any other business. We have responsibilities to our players who are our employees. The Covid-19 crisis has had a devastating impact on sports both from a club perspective as well as the fans who have not been able to watch their favourite teams live due to social distancing. As much of our income comes from match related revenues, we have had to think out of the box how we find other income streams. We have known that Liam Mooney who founded Blue Pencil is from Plymouth and an ex Rugby player himself so when we heard about the franchise opportunities he had; we knew it was a perfect match!”
The partnership between Blue Pencil and Plymouth Albion is also one way of assisting Rugby players who often only play part-time to learn a new skill set and one that is actually not as a dissimilar as you may think. Liam Mooney who knows this transition only too well sees synergy with the mindset and tenacity you need to be successful in Rugby with the qualities you need in recruitment:
“Rugby and recruitment are both highly competitive activities – winning matches or making placements requires diligence, professionalism and most of all, a winning mindset”.
Heading up the Blue Pencil South West franchise is Plymouth Albion’s Assistant Rugby Coach, Will Hurrell. Will retired from playing professional rugby earlier in the year after suffering a probable stroke as a result of a head injury incurred during a premiership match in January. Will be focussed on business development for the franchise alongside his duties as a Coach to Plymouth Albion RFC.
With such a talented team of individuals involved in getting their recruitment operation off the ground, it is not surprising that Max Venables at Plymouth Albion is confident he has a winning formula for recruitment as well as Rugby.
