Sale FC 29–26 Plymouth Albion

Plymouth Albion produced a spirited and determined performance on the road but were narrowly edged out 29–26 by Sale FC in a dramatic encounter at Heywood Road.

Heading into the fixture, Albion sat second in National One with a confirmed play-off place already secured, but with ambitions of locking in a home semi-final and keeping pressure on league leaders Rotherham Titans. Sale, meanwhile, were playing their final home game of the season and showed their intent from the outset in front of their home crowd.

First Half

Sale kicked off in breezy conditions, but Albion quickly asserted themselves. Early scrum dominance and strong carries allowed the visitors to build territory, showing clear attacking intent through a series of penalties and lineout opportunities.

Despite controlling much of the early play, Albion initially struggled to convert pressure into points. However, their persistence paid off after 11 minutes when Zack Wimbush powered over for the opening try. Iwan Jenkins added the conversion to give Albion a 7–0 lead.

Sale responded swiftly, capitalising on space following an off-the-ball incident to score their first try. Although the conversion was missed, momentum began to shift. Against the run of play, Sale struck again through Tom Walsh to take a 10–7 lead.

Albion continued to control possession for long periods but were made to work for every opportunity. Sale’s resilience was evident, and they extended their lead through a driving maul to make it 15–7.

A crucial defensive moment followed as Bobby Wigginton produced a try-saving tackle to keep Albion within reach.

Late in the half, Albion found their reward. A brilliant kick from Jenkins turned defence into attack, and after sustained pressure, a powerful carry from Joel Broadhurst created space for Wigginton to cross. The conversion drifted wide, leaving Sale with a narrow 15–12 lead at the break.

Second Half

Albion started the second half with renewed control, dominating territory and possession. The introduction of Ben Moa added further energy, while the return of Dan Pullinger and the presence of Zack Wimbush continued to influence proceedings.

The breakthrough came through individual brilliance from captain Jack Oulton. A sharp show-and-go saw him beat multiple defenders to score, with Jenkins converting to restore Albion’s lead at 19–15.

Moments later, Albion struck again. From the restart, a superb box kick from Oulton set Noah Fenton away, and the winger raced clear to score. Jenkins added the extras, and Albion suddenly held a commanding 26–15 advantage, securing a crucial bonus point in the process.

Sale, however, refused to fade. After introducing all five replacements, they applied sustained pressure and found a route back into the game through a lightning counter-attack try from Jason Dixon, converted to close the gap to 26–22.

The final quarter became a test of resilience. Albion’s bench, including Corrie Barrett, Ben Moa, and Archie Hill, demonstrated the depth within the squad, with Barrett making an immediate impact by winning a penalty at the scrum.

Despite Albion’s control in phases, Sale continued to threaten and eventually regained the lead late on through Mark Dixon, with the conversion giving the hosts a 29–26 advantage.

Deep into stoppage time, Albion showed composure and ambition. After controlling possession and earning a crucial penalty, Jenkins opted to kick to the corner rather than take the points. In a bold attempt to snatch victory, Albion drove for the line, but the maul collapsed at the decisive moment, bringing an end to a gripping contest.

Post-Match

While the result ultimately went against them, Albion can take significant positives from a performance full of intent, attacking quality, and resilience against one of the division’s strongest home sides.

With results elsewhere confirming Rotherham’s position at the summit, Albion’s focus now turns to securing a home play-off semi-final.

They return to Brickfields next Saturday, 25 April, for the final game of the regular season against Leeds Tykes. A strong finish in front of the home support will be key as Albion look to carry momentum into the play-offs.
