ANOTHER SEASON AT PLYMOUTH ALBION FOR SALTER
Plymouth Albion Hooker Jamie Salter is delighted to be signing up for a new season at the club. At 34 he is one of the most senior and most experienced members of the squad. The PE teacher says he’s determined to keep playing as long as his body will let him and it seems to be so far, so good.
“My body’s doing alright. I have had a scan on my shoulder but I managed to get through the season okay,” he says.
“I had a really good season during the 2018/2019 campaign. It was a bit of a slow start for us but after Christmas we played really well. I’ve had a great season and even came out as the highest try scorer, so I’m really enjoying my rugby, which helps massively.”
Jamie is Cornish and played for Helston, Penzance and Newlyn and then Mounts Bay, a club which now doesn’t exist. He went to Marjon University in Plymouth and later signed full-time for Plymouth Albion. He is head of Physical Education at Newton Abbot College and has been coaching the Devon U15s rugby side.
This is his third spell at Plymouth, and he says that his experiences have changed his attitude to playing.
“When I was at Albion on a full-time contract, it really was the be all and end all. But having something else does take the pressure off. You can give it your all at training and on the pitch, but you can’t dwell on it because on Monday morning you’re back to reality and dealing with a parent whose son or daughter has lost a PE top!
“Over the past three years I think I’ve played some of my best rugby. I want to keep playing and keep coaching. In coaching Devon Boys I can see just how much enjoyment there is – how keen and enthusiastic they are. That picks me up and makes me want to carry on learning on the pitch.”
