Plymouth Albion Vision and Mission

As Plymouth Albion celebrates its 150th year, the club continues to honour its proud heritage while driving forward with a clear and ambitious strategic direction designed to shape the next era both on and off the field.

Built on renewed momentum and a shared vision for the future, Albion remains focused on its objective of promotion to the newly named Champ. With the landscape of the second tier continually evolving, the club is positioning itself to compete alongside some of the strongest teams in English rugby, ensuring that performance on the pitch and progress behind the scenes work together to support sustainable, long-term success.

Brickfields already meet all the necessary Champ criteria and Albion is the 14th best attended club in the country. Now, the focus turns to performance from the squad on the pitch to the dedicated team of staff working tirelessly off it to make the vision a reality.

Albion certainly wouldn’t be out of place among established clubs like Bedford Blues, Coventry, and local rivals Cornish Pirates. The past two seasons have seen Albion finish in the top four, including a remarkable 10-game winning streak last campaign.

Off the field, progress continues at pace. The club’s community department is expanding rugby’s reach in schools and through regular Brickfields-based camps. Season ticket sales and matchday attendance are up year on year, and more than 30 new business partners have come on board this season, evidence of growing belief in the club’s ambition.

A Club with History – And Resilience

As Albion continues to write its next chapter, it’s important to recognise the journey that’s brought the club to this point.

Between 2003 and 2005, Albion stood at the very edge of top-flight rugby securing third-place league finishes and reaching their first Twickenham cup final in 2004–05. Brickfields regularly welcomed thousands through the gates, and the club was widely admired in the rugby world.

But difficult years followed. Financial challenges and on-pitch struggles saw Albion relegated from the Championship in April 2015 after 13 consecutive years in the second tier.

Then came the club’s most defining test. In March 2016, Plymouth Albion entered administration. It was a moment that could have signalled the end.

Instead, it became the turning point.

The club was rescued by two former players – David Venables and Bruce Priday – whose belief in Albion’s identity and potential never wavered. Since then, the club has been rebuilt and re-energised. That hard-earned resilience now underpins the bold new plan being launched today.

Plymouth Albion Vision & Mission

As Plymouth Albion celebrates its 150th year, the club continues to deliver on the bold and forward-looking plan first set out at the start of the 2025/26 season, designed to shape the next era of its proud history.

Rooted in tradition but driven by ambition, the strategic direction outlines Albion’s 10-year vision to become Premiership-ready, alongside a focused 5-year mission to establish the club as a sustainable and competitive force in the Championship.

Honouring the Past, Building the Future

Marking 150 years of rugby heritage, Albion is using this milestone as a springboard into a new era, one defined by professional excellence, deep community ties, and unshakable ambition.

“As we reflect on 150 years of Albion, we’ve taken the time to consider what this club has meant to Plymouth, to rugby, and to the people who have shaped it,” said Max Venables, Managing Director of Plymouth Albion RFC. “But this is more than a moment to look back. It’s a moment to look forward. We are laying the foundations now to ensure that the next 150 years are even more remarkable than the last.”

10-Year Vision: Premiership-Ready

Albion’s long-term vision is clear: to build a club capable of competing in the Gallagher Premiership within the next decade. That ambition goes far beyond on-pitch performance. It encompasses elite facilities, top-level governance, commercial strength, and a culture of excellence throughout the organisation.

“Premiership rugby isn’t just about being at the top of the table – it’s about acting like a top-tier club in everything we do,” added James Greenacre, Albion’s Commercial Director. “That means investment in infrastructure, people, and partnerships – and it means having a plan that’s bold, smart, and sustainable.”

5-Year Mission: A Championship Club Built to Last

The club’s immediate goal is to become a competitive and sustainable Championship rugby club within five years. That means financial resilience, a high-performance rugby programme, and deep, lasting relationships with the community and commercial partners.

Greenacre added “Plymouth deserves a club it can be proud of, not just on matchdays but every day. Our focus is on sustainable growth – financially, socially, and environmentally – and creating a home for rugby excellence in the Southwest.”

Five Strategic Pillars

To bring this vision to life, Plymouth Albion has committed to five key strategic pillars:

  1. Performance Pathway – Investing in coaching, player development, and facilities to support elite rugby.
  2. Community & Culture – Strengthening links with schools, grassroots clubs, and local institutions to ensure lasting impact and support.
  3. Commercial Growth – Growing matchday and non-matchday revenue through strategic sponsorships and partnerships.
  4. Operational Excellence – Building a modern, agile, and professional club infrastructure.
  5. Fan Engagement – Enhancing the matchday experience and nurturing a passionate, growing supporter base.

“This is a once-in-a-generation moment,” added Max Venables. “We have the history, the heart, and the hunger – now we have a plan. We’re calling on everyone who believes in Plymouth Albion to join us as we write the next chapter together.”

From the brink of collapse to the edge of promotion, Plymouth Albion’s story is one of resilience and relentless ambition.

Now is the time. The next chapter begins together.
